How to choose SFP optics
- SFP ports run at 1 Gb/s; most SFP+ ports also accept 1G SFP modules, but check the host
- 1000BASE-SX uses multimode fibre for short runs; LX/LH uses single-mode up to about 10 km
- EX and ZX optics cover longer single-mode spans (around 40 km and 70 to 80 km)
- 1000BASE-T modules give an RJ-45 copper port for up to 100 m of Cat 5e
- BiDi (BX) optics use one fibre strand and are bought as upstream/downstream pairs
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a 1G SFP in an SFP+ port?
Often yes, but only if the host port supports 1G operation. Check the switch hardware guide for 1G support on SFP+ ports.
