Description
A copper SFP module that provides a gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port inside an SFP slot. It lets a fibre-oriented switch connect to ordinary twisted-pair devices such as servers, printers, wireless controllers or a neighbouring switch, without adding a separate media converter. Standard Category 5e UTP or STP cabling is used, and the maximum length is 100 m. Some switch models also allow it to link at 100 Mbps, but only where the switch documentation says so. Because there is no laser, no fibre cleaning or loss budgeting is involved, which simplifies work in mixed copper and fibre closets. Check the port notes for your switch: the vendor guide restricts copper SFPs on certain SFP28 ports and QSFP adapters, and on a few models the modules only work in particular port ranges.
