Choose an access point around the clients, rooms and applications you need to serve. A newer Wi-Fi generation alone does not tell you how many access points to install.
Understand the generations
Wi-Fi 6 uses 802.11ax in 2.4 and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 6E extends that generation into 6 GHz; Wi-Fi 7 is based on 802.11be and can operate across all three bands. Features still depend on the particular access point and client. Cisco’s migration guide explains the generations and deployment requirements.
Treat 6 GHz as a design choice. Check country approval, the exact regulatory variant, client support and security requirements before including it in a design. Cisco’s guide also covers 6 GHz security and RF planning; an existing coverage plan should be reassessed rather than copied unchanged. Deployment requirements.
Start with the site
Record room sizes, wall construction, ceiling height, mounting positions and busy areas. Count active clients and identify voice, video, scanning or other latency-sensitive traffic. Ask for a survey and a validation plan with the proposed client types. Do not divide a building’s floor area by a generic coverage radius.
For each proposed location, check:
- Indoor or outdoor environment and mounting hardware
- Client bands and required application performance
- Cable route, cable test results and available switch port
- PoE standard and the access point’s operating modes under the available power
- Uplink speed, controller or cloud management, and software compatibility
Power and uplink needs are model-specific: check the exact manufacturer data sheet instead of assuming every Wi-Fi 7 access point needs the same switch. Keep the switch’s total power budget in the design as well as the port rating.
Include management in the purchase
Ask which management mode you will use, which software release supports the access point, and which licence is required. Record the subscription term and renewal responsibility. See Licences and support contracts.
What to send with a quote request
Include the installation country, floor plan, client types and counts, existing controller/software, switch model and available PoE, and required mounts. Specify the exact regulatory variant before accepting a quote.
