An upgrade starts with the exact server and installed configuration. Matching capacity or physical appearance is not enough. This guide covers components for an existing platform; complete server and storage-array listings remain deferred.

Memory: match the platform first

Record the server model and generation, processors, installed DIMM part numbers, occupied slots and required final capacity. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility list and the service manual for that configuration.

Check memory generation, module type, capacity, rank and supported speed. Lenovo’s memory summary separates different memory technologies and platform-specific options; a similar description does not establish interchangeability. Lenovo ThinkSystem memory summary.

Follow the exact platform’s population rules. For example, Lenovo’s installation guidance makes population order dependent on processor count, DIMM count and memory mode. That is a reason to consult your own server’s manual, rather than copy a slot layout from another model. Lenovo population guidance.

Before ordering, prepare a proposed slot map and check whether the desired configuration changes operating speed or usable capacity. Plan a maintenance window and run the platform diagnostics after installation.

Drives: check the complete storage path

Capture the drive part number, interface, capacity, form factor, carrier, backplane, controller and firmware. Check compatibility across the whole path; a drive fitting the bay is only the first check.

For SSDs, compare workload and endurance as well as capacity. Dell’s SSD FAQ distinguishes read-intensive, mixed-use and write-intensive workloads and discusses endurance. Match the drive’s documented endurance to your measured writes and intended service life. Dell enterprise SSD FAQ.

For a replacement in an existing array, check the controller’s replacement rules, sector format, usable capacity and rebuild procedure. Confirm whether the listing includes the correct carrier. Do not assume hot-plug capability from the drive alone: check the platform’s documented procedure.

Protect the data

Verify a recoverable backup before changing memory or storage. Record the existing configuration and planned rollback. For drive replacements, check array health and the manufacturer’s instructions before removing a unit; schedule enough time to verify the rebuild and application health.

What to include in a quote

Send the server model/generation, current component part numbers, processor and slot layout for memory, and controller/backplane/carrier details for drives. State whether you are adding capacity or replacing a failed part. Remove passwords and sensitive customer data from diagnostic exports.
