The SFP-10G-AOC5M is a 10 Gigabit active optical cable, 5 m long, with an SFP+ plug moulded onto each end and multimode fibre inside the jacket. Cisco's data sheet describes it as an active optical cable assembly with roughly 1 W of power. The thin fibre is lighter than copper twinax and is not affected by electrical noise along the route. It is intended for data-centre environments and has a standard commercial temperature range. Handle it by the connector bodies, keep the bend radius generous, and avoid tight ties that squeeze the jacket. Because it is built to a set length, stock planning is by length, so a rack plan listing each link helps ordering. The optics sit inside the connector bodies, so it behaves like a pair of short-reach transceivers joined by fibre, with no LC connectors to clean. Hot-swap behaviour follows the host port, and the link normally comes up once both ends are seated. Choose it for rows of cabinets where the cable must leave one rack, cross a short gap and enter the next.
