The QSFP-H40G-AOC5M is a 40 Gigabit active optical cable, 5 m long, with a QSFP+ connector on each end and multimode fibre carrying four lanes between them. Both ends are permanently attached, so nothing needs cleaning, and the whole cable is replaced if either end is damaged. Cisco's 40GBASE QSFP data sheet lists it among the QSFP-to-QSFP active optical cables, available from 1 m to 30 m. The optics are sealed into the connector bodies, so there are no MPO connectors to clean and no transceivers to match. Choose it for rows of cabinets where the cable must leave one rack, cross a short gap and enter the next. The fibre jacket is lighter and thinner than 40G copper and avoids the reach limits copper has at this speed. The rate is fixed by the cable type, so the port at each end must be set for the matching speed. It is intended for data-centre environments and has a standard commercial temperature range. Keep a spare of the same length on the shelf if the link is critical, as there is no field repair for a moulded cable.
